Athletes Will Be Paid On Time Assures Minister Cox

Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and the Arts, Sen. Norland Cox is satisfied that everything is on stream for a successful hosting of the Grenada Invitational 2019

The minister has also given the assurance that athletes that compete at the event will be paid at the end of the event.

In previous years, the Grenada Invitational had been plagued with complaints that athletes had not been paid their appearance fees and this had cast a dark shadow on the reputation of the event.

Minister Cox said this year the Grenada Invitational committee made some recommendations to the Ministry of Sports, which were forwarded to and approved by cabinet, to put some measures in place to ensure that payments to the athletes are assured.  This is also with the support of the Grenada Athletic Association.

He confirmed that Government and the Ministry of Sports will be providing all the necessary technical support as well as some financial support to the Grenadian Invitational to ensure the success of the event.

“The estimated amount of money that has been allocated for lane fees are basically held and waiting there and as soon as the games are completed it will be dispensed to the athletes”, the minister said.

The event, he stated is very crucial for Grenada as the games were featured on ESPN and viewed in one hundred and twelve million households, which is very impactful for Grenada and sports in general. He anticipates that young athletes from the schools will come out and interact with some of the international athletes at the event and it’s the ministry and government’s hope that the event would inspire them to perform outstandingly.

Cox mentioned as well that Grenada’s Olympic champion, gold and silver medalist Kirani James is presently on island as an ambassador to the games and though he won’t be participating this year he will be involved in interactive meet and greet sessions with the athletes and is expected to engage in some commentary during the games as well.

The third Grenada Invitational Games will be on Saturday and is anticipated to be another exciting event.
