CaribWorldNews, MIAMI, FL, Thurs. Jan. 7, 2010: Buju Banton`s record executives have chosen a nationally recognized criminal defense lawyer to fight federal drug charges brought against the renowned reggae singer.
Miami defense attorney David Oscar Markus, past president of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Federal Bar Association, has been hired to fight the case brought against the singer, born Mark Anthony Myrie.
Last month, Banton`s Gargamel Music Inc. head, Tracii McGregor, had told CaribWorldNews exclusively that Markus was one of two attorneys being considered to lead the `fight` to clear the Jamaican-born singer.
Like McGregor, Markus insists Banton is innocent and was set up by `some evil people trying to take advantage of his trusting and honest character.`
The news comes as Banton was moved to Tampa and is set to appear in court there today. He is charged with conspiracy to traffic more than five kilograms of cocaine. Banton was arrested in Miami on Dec. 10th and indicted on Dec. 15th along with two other men.
The Grammy-nominated singer could face up to life in prison and have property deemed to have been gained because of drug trafficking, forfeited.
