Cayman Islands See Burglaries Spike

CaribWorldNews, GEORGETOWN, Cayman, Fri. Aug. 21, 2009: Burglaries in the Cayman Islands are on the increase, cops here said Thursday.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said out of 1,315 criminal offenses recorded in the first half of this year, burglaries jumped the highest.

Overall, while the crime rate rose from 1,186 for the same period last year, the biggest jump came in burglaries, which climbed to 300 from 194.

`Acquisitive crime, where people steal items to sell on, could be expected to rise during an economic downturn,` Police Commissioner David Baines said in a statement. `We have been looking at measures to counteract this.`
