GFA’s Pure Grenada Cup officially launched

A Grenada Football Association (GFA) initiative, The Pure Grenada Cup scheduled for March this year involving some eight football teams across the island was officially launched at the Grenada National Stadium last Friday.

The launch, which also gave an insight into the highly anticipated tournament and an opportunity to view the uniforms to be used by the participating teams, was attended by members of the GFA, Minister of Sports, sponsors and representatives of the participating teams.

Among persons present was the Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee Alvin Clouden who gave the assurance that the event would seek to showcase the best of Grenada football and what the Pure Grenada Cup is all about. He added that given the GFA’s new approach to handling the business of football in Grenada, he is of the view that the Pure Grenada Cup would mark the turning point in the way football is organized in Grenada, and even move Grenada’s current 150th FIFA ranking into the double digit in the next five years.

Clouden said it is the hope of the FA that the

Pure Grenada Cup would, in the not too distant future be the nursery for scouts in search of talent for the international level, and would one day become the envy among Caribbean football associations.

Clouden used the opportunity to encourage the business community to get on board and the football fans to give their support to their respective parish teams.

President of the GFA Cheney Joseph in his address to last Friday’s launched said the pure Grenada Cup is all part of the AF’s effort to stay on course with the current trend of football the world over, and showcasing the best footballers in the respective parishes, to the world.

Joseph said the tournament would afford the players involved the opportunity to display in real time the level of football in their parishes and also make a name for themselves.

The president attributed the Pure Grenada Cup competition; the rebranding of the Inter-Parish or Super League competition, to football enthusiast, Che Keens-Douglass whose idea was to make the sport more attractive for players and patrons. The objective he said is to give the best players the opportunity to display their talent and allow the coaches and selectors to decide who moves on to the next level.

The president hinted that their vision for the Pure Grenada Cup is to have the winning parish represent Grenada in future CONCACAF tournaments, affording that parish the opportunity to move from a level of amateurs to professionals. He added that Grenada has great talent but lacks the opportunity to expose those talents and the Pure Grenada Cup would seek to address just that.

Joseph said the FA is investing over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in appearance fees for the hosting of the tournament, in addition, he said there would an appearance fee for each player and seven officials for every game played in the tournament.

Joseph took the opportunity to thank all who contributed in one way or another in bringing the tournament to a reality.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Kevin Andall commended the GFA for their initiative and ensuring that football takes its rightful place in the hearts of Grenadians.  The tournament he said symbolizes an upsurge in the quality and quantity of football played in Grenada.

The ministry, Andall said, commends the GFA for its vision and determination in making the tournament a reality. He also lauded the sponsors that have thus far lent their support to the idea and reminded football fans and players that the success of the tournament would be dependent on the love and support they give to it.

The eight participating teams in the competition includes Carriacou and Petit Martinique Stingrays, St Patrick’s Crown City Strikers, St John Dolphins, National U20 Young Gunners, St Andrew Big Parish Stars, St George’s Royal Canons and St Mark Western Stars.

The tournament kicks of at 6 pm on March 17th at the Kirani James Stadium.
