Jamaican Plane Hijacker On Trial

CaribWorldNews, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Tues. Sept. 15, 2009: The trial of a 21-year-old Jamaican man, accused in an April hijacking of a CanJet Airlines, began on Monday.

Stephen Fray is facing six charges, including robbery and assault, in the April 19 incident at Montego Bay`s Sangster airport.

Fray allegedly fired a gun he was carying into the air, demanded to be flown off the island and took cash from passengers in a six-hour standoff that ended when security officers from the island burst in and captured him. Authorities have described Fray as `mentally challenged` and his motive for hijacking the plane remains unclear.

If convicted he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
