CaribWorldNews, PROVINCALES, Turks & Caicos, Mon. Sept. 14, 2009: A top resort and spa in the Turks & Caicos islands has been forced to close it doors.
The Leeward Resort Ltd, the underlying owners of the property development in Turks and Caicos has been forced into receivership and closed without warning, Nikki Beach officials said.
`Nikki Beach Resort in Turks and Caicos was a management contract whereas Nikki Beach did not own the development and is out of our control,` the resort`s officials said on its website last night, adding they are `sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.`
The resort had largely catered to celebrities and an exclusive clientele, and offered personal butlers and a pillow menu for the past year and a half.
Reports are not yet clear on how many jobs will be lost on the island due to the closure of the 48 rooms and suites resort, which was rated No. 2 on its list of the `21 Hottest Caribbean Escapes` by the Travel Channel.
The closure, however, definitely adds to the overall Caribbean tourism job loss, which has occurred in many islands recently, including in the Bahamas and Jamaica.
The global economic recession has been blamed for the declining tourist arrivals in many Caribbean islands.
