British Drug Mule Gets 3 years

A fifty-nine year old British national who pleaded guilty to a charge of drug trafficking at the St Georges Magistrate Court on Tuesday has been sentenced to three years in prison.

The gentleman who goes by the name of Curtis Collins had sentence handed down to him by Chief Magistrate Tamara Gill some five weeks after he was netted at the Maurice Bishop International Airport moments before boarding a British Airways flight to England.

According to information from the court some $110,000.00 worth of cocaine was discovered hidden in the back of some wooden picture frames belonging to Collins.

Informer learned that Collins’ trip to Grenada was centred around a visit to his aunt on the sister isle of Carriacou.

Prior to the commencement of the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, defence Counsel Anselm Clouden whom the court was told had carriage of the matter, hinted to the court that he was no longer representing Collins and therefore the British National was forced to battle his way through the hearing on his own.

His earlier declaration that he was not well, and that the medication for his illness was not readily available in the right dosage at the prison, plus explaining that he was the one caring for his ailing mum in England might have contributed to reducing what could have been a maximum seven-year sentence, to three years.

The issue of a none custodial sentence was considered in the event that Collins was in a position to pay a fine, he indicated to the court that he was not in a position to pay any significant sum leaving the court with little option, but to impose the custodial sentence.
