Caribbean-Born Republican Seeks Alabama Congressional Seat

CaribWorldNews, WASHINGTON, D.C., Fri. May 28, 2010: A conservative-talking, Obama-bashing Trinidad & Tobago-born national is seeking a congressional seat in Alabama as a Republican.

Les Phillip, a black Republican, who said in a TV spot released this week that he wants to stop President Obama `from destroying our nation,` is running for Alabama`s Fifth Congressional District. It is a seat currently occupied by Democrat-turned-Republican, Rep. Parker Griffith.

Griffith  is a member of the the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, widely considered one of the three most powerful in the House of Representatives. He serves on the Oversight and Investigations, Energy and Environment and Communications, Technology and the Internet subcommittees.

Phillip is squaring off next Tuesday in a Republican primary against Mo Brooks, a county commissioner, and congressman Parker Griffith, a former Democrat who switched parties in December due to what he called his misgivings about party policies.

He has the endorsement of former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who has predicted the Alabama businessman will be a future Republican party leader.

`We need 434 more just like him in Congress,` Huckabee commented recently.

This week, in a move seemingly to get national attention, Phillip released an ad bashing the President. The ad sets up a contrast between Phillip and President Obama, who Phillip says `fell in with left-wing radicals,` `played with terrorists,` and `allowed his America-hating pastor to baptize his children.`
It includes a shot of Obama smoking a cigarette – an image, as the Washington Post`s Dave Weigel notes, that is a forgery.
Philip says in the spot that while he loves America, `President Obama is ashamed of it.`
In a comment seemingly designed to address the concerns of charges of racism against the Tea Party movement, Philip adds, `and they`re not going to call me a racist.`
The spot closes with a shot of Philip in a National Rifle Association baseball cap.

Phillip was born May 29, 1963, to Randolph and Elvina Phillip in the Caribbean country of Trinidad –Tobago. The Family moved to St. Croix before immigrating to the United States.

Phillip became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1978. He is a former aviator for the U.S. Navy and an experienced operational manager. After leaving the Navy, he entered the private sector where he has owned businesses and worked in sales, marketing, project management and operations. His past professional experience includes Arrow Electronics in Huntsville, AL, where he successfully increased sales and implemented cost-saving processes for the company. At Vulcan Materials in Birmingham, Phillip implemented process improvements and strategic solutions for the company, resulting in more efficient operations.

As a candidate for Congress, he insists he has a passion for defending the Constitution, protecting the freedoms held dear and restoring America`s conservative values.

The Village Voice has called Phillip`s tactics `ridiculous … race-baiting,` while the headline on the satirical Wonkette website read: `Alabama Wingnut Candidate Thinks Liberals Will Shut Up Because He`s Black.`
