Drug Bust in the village of Perseverance

Two out of the three men arrested and charged in connection with last Saturday’s drug bust in the village of Perseverance in St George’s have been denied bail.

The two, Michael James, a resident of the village of Mt Parnassus in St George’s andJahniel Charles from the village of Woburn in St George’s were both denied bail by Chief Magistrate Tamara Gill as Prosecution forcefully objected to a bail request made on their behalf, by defense lawyer Peter David at the St George’s Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

The prosecution team argued that both men are presently on bail for a similar offense and if released on bail, there is a strong likelihood of repeat offenses. Despite an equally solid argument in favor of bail from the Defense, bail was denied, except in the case of the third defendant eighteen-year-old Hakim Mc. Queen who was granted bail in the sum of $40.000.00 with two sureties.

Mc. Queen was ordered to report to the Central Police Station every Monday between the hours of 6am and 6pm, as part of his bail condition.

According to information reaching the Grenada Informer, all three men were arrested and charged with trafficking and possession of a controlled drug after members of the Drug Squad intercepted a vehicle in which they were traveling and discovered just over fifty pounds of marijuana.

Sources told this newspaper that at the time of the arrest the lawmen were acting on special intelligence, and hold the view that the cannabis found is just part of a much bigger quantity that to-date has evaded the eyes of the police.

Both Charles represented in court by defense counsel Derrick Sylvester and James represented by Peter David were recently placed on $75,000.00 bail on charges of conspiracy to traffic a controlled drug.

All three are expected to make their second court appearance on June 16th.
