Philus Francis, a vagrant who uses the sidewalks in the town of Grenville as his place of abode, had an eight-month jail term handed down on him at the Grenville Magistrate court last Monday.
The accused pleaded guilty to stealing four coconuts from the lands of Dr. Hinds, an area in the town of Grenville.
Magistrate John reminded the accused, before she sentenced him, that there is a zero tolerance attitude in effect for found guilty under the predial larceny act.
The accused pleaded with the court that he did not want to go back to jail.
The officer that arrested Francis told the court that there have been numerous complaints about the accused distressing residents around the town, including an elderly lady living close to the La Digue bus stand. Dr. Hinds was also present in court and the coconuts, which had been recovered, returned to him.
