Former Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Fraud

A former police officer that earlier this year appeared before Chief Magistrate Tamara Gill on a series of fraud charges has now accepted full responsibility for his actions.

Elvin Phillip, a well-known online car dealer but no stranger to the courts, having been convicted in 2015 on similar charges of fraud, on Tuesday, acting on the advice of defence Counsel Peter David pleaded guilty to four charges read to him at the St. George’s Magistrate Court.

The charges surrounded the collection of cash from customers, as payment for the importation of vehicles that never got to their respective owners, after months and in some case years of waiting.

According to information coming from the court on Tuesday, the charges dated back to November 2015, when one customer was defrauded the sum of $8,300, a second on 12th December 2016 the sum of $9,790, a third on 21st December 2016 the sum of  $10,395 and the fourth customer on 12th January 2017 the sum of $10,500.

Information reaching the Grenada Informer indicated that most of the customers, among them a retired police officer had gone through the rigours of obtaining loans to make the payments.

When the matter appeared in court in March of this year Phillip assured the court through his then attorney Francis Williams that most of the vehicles were on their way and so is was just a matter of time before the customers’ orders were met.

However, at a subsequent hearing in June, defence lawyer Williams withdrew from the case on the basis that his client was not truthful in passing on information to him. On that day, however, defense counsel Pater David opted to assist Phillip in the matter.

Phillip faces a total of five counts of fraud one of which is indictable, however during Tuesday’s sitting the prosecution hinted that there are plans to add a sixth count.

Phillip returns to court on August 1st for sentencing when the final decision rests in the hands of Chief Magistrate Tamara Gill.
