Forty-eight-year-old man remanded to prison for stealing wheelchair

A 48-year-old man who frequented the Carrier/Conference, St Andrew area with no fixed place of abode appeared before the Grenville Magistrate’s Court last Monday, charged with stealing one wheelchair valued at $500.00, the property of 62- year-old Ralda Poncho.

The accused Denroy Charles pleaded guilty to stealing the wheelchair and was remanded to custody at the Richmond Hill Prison in spite of his pleas to sentence him instead. Charles told the court he didn’t want to be remanded, as he is fearful of being beaten up by other inmates.

According to the prosecutor, the accused is considered to be a public nuisance and there is no better place for him than inside the walls of the prison as persons from the districts he frequents complain of his presence. When questioned about the wheel chair Charles told the court that it was an old wheel hair. The wheelchair had been beneath the house of the complainant when it was stolen by the accused, the prosecutor told the court.

Magistrate John held the view that the accused may also require some level of treatment; may have to be sentenced to a jail term and during that period, treatment could be administered to him at the Mt Gay Hospital for the mentally ill. However, she does not have the jurisdiction to send him straight to the Mt Gay facility and while on remand that procedure cannot be conducted. That being the case she expressed interest in getting information on him from someone in the community who knows him before sentence is passed on the next occasion he is brought back to court.
