Government pledges $200,000.00 to Pure Grenada Music Festival 2017

Pure Grenada music festival 2017 launched on Wednesday 5th October 2016 at Venus Restaurant and Sports Lounge in Grand Anse.

The journey towards the Pure Grenada Music Festival started a few years ago and the first steering committee meeting was in June 2014, which led up to the first festival this year 2016. It was hosted from the 5th to the 10th of April at different venues.

Dieter Burkhalter, chairman of the steering committee of the Pure Grenada Music Festival, said over 100 musicians were involved in this years’ festival which he considers a great achievement, although the organizers didn’t reach their financial target. He is pleased however that to date, all their bills are settled. They owe no debts thanks to the contributions of generous persons who helped towards handling them.

He said for next years’ festival there would be two different stages and they will continue to book artists who are real musicians and will continue to have as many local artists doing original pieces as possible. Leading up to the festival eight bands would be chosen on the 8th December to participate at the festival through a selection process. Mr. Burkhalter declared that the 2017 edition of the Pure Grenada Music Festival would be the 5th-7th May.

Minister for Culture Hon. Brenda Hood, hinted at the media launch that the Government of Grenada would give $200,000.00 as a form of support towards the festival. According to her, the government is comfortable and pleased with what transpired at last years’ festival and also happy that Grenada got the exposure to the rest of the world.

She appealed to the private sector to give their support to the festival because “it’s all about Grenada and one person cannot do it alone”. She believes that if everyone works together as a team to promote the festival it will grow from strength to strength.

She is confident that 10 years from now, the festival will move to a different level with the commitment of everyone. The Grenada Tourism Authority has also partnered with the Pure Grenada Music Festival.
