“We need to deal with the issues at hand, too many times we deal with personalities rather than principles so that our country would be better off, it is time we get it right”.
This was the comment of Prime Minister Keith Mitchell as he responded to concerns from some quarters regarding the appointment of his son Olinga Mitchell as Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Finance.
2The prime minister stated that it is unfortunate that young Mitchell’s appointment has been made an issue and told the media at the weekly post-cabinet briefing last week Tuesday that his son is not just a legal advisor but he is also doing other work. He added that his son has a degree in law and have been called to the bar in three states in the United States of America, clearly making him well qualified for the job.
According to Prime Minister Mitchell, Olinga is also an engineer with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and therefore he can serve in various areas. He hinted that it was initially his advice to his son who was pursuing other private sector initiatives, to zero in on some areas and give his service to the country. He said that if anyone has to take any blame it should be him (Dr Mitchell) because it was his request to his son that its time to settle down and get something specific and make some contribution.
The prime minister maintained that he has never attacked the sons or daughters; wives or husbands of any politician because they all have a right to work and therefore if his son can do the job why raise it as an issue.
Money is not the issue PM Mitchell said because his son is making a contribution and that’s what he is happy about. He believes that is son is demonstrating a sense of responsibility and he is happy about that since he would not always be around to advise him.
