US Worker To Serve 15 Years In Cuban Jail


News Americas, Havana, Cuba, Mon. Mar. 14, 2011: A 61-year-old American has been sentenced to serve 15 years in a Cuban jail for crimes against the state.

Alan Gross, was was in Cuba working as a contractor for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) on a program aimed at promoting democracy in Cuba, was sentenced Friday.

His sentencing came over a year after his December 2009 arrest for setting up illegal internet connections in Cuba under a program funded by the US government.

The US has warned that there can be no further easing of relations between the two countries until he is released.
Mrs. Gross has pleaded with the Cuban government to no avail for her husband’s release on humanitarian grounds saying her husband suffers from gout, ulcers and has developed arthritis in prison.
